It has been an insane spring and summer. But, we are somewhat settled into our historical home at Randolph AFB, complete with possible ghost and plumbing problems, and I am finally really getting back to work. I apologize for the hiatus and abbreviated newsletter this month. Starting in August, my newsletters will be coming out bi-monthly, for a couple of reasons. Part of it is time, it does take some time to get them together but another is releases. I am spacing my releases out, releasing longer, single-title/category length books, and writing a couple of books I am pitching to NY. Although I will have fewer releases, the books will be longer, more in depth character studies. There will be rereleases of books that were short novels or novellas, that I have rewritten, sequels to some of those, and brand new books that has no connection to other books.
As always, I need to thank my readers for being understanding and supportive as I go through this change of pace for my work. Without them, I wouldn't be able to make it.

Romantic Westerns

I don't know if it is the cowboys, or the feeling of freedom of the old west, or it might just be the strong Native American Warrior...but I love Westerns. Something that I have been missing is a good collection of westerns in the romance genre. Yes, they are still there, but NY has turned up their nose at them, saying they don't sell. So when I find a person I like, I grab hold and read everything they have in print or ebook. This month, with her Samhain print release, Beth Williamson explodes into the bookstores with her first book of the Malloy Series: The Bounty.

I have been on a Western ready kick for the past week or so. I've been reading some of my favs, which include Susan Kay Law, but I am eagerly awaiting my copy of Beth Williamson's book, The Bounty. I have read it in ebook, but I had to have it in print. I will use the discloser that Beth is one of my friends, we share three companies and two editors, lol, but this has nothing to do with it. I don't recommend books for friends unless I think it is worth it, and The Bounty is worth the price of print and more.
She knows her genre backwards and forwards, but the kicker for me is that she truly understands her characters. As I told others, I felt like crawled right under their skin and lived their journey to find love. And, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Beth's ability to paint the picture, to make you feel as if you are sitting in the Old West. Do yourself a favor and check her out. www.bethwilliamson.com

The Last Detail-futuristic, erotic romance- Lou Campbell is on her last job, the last detail. Sam Dawson is a big one, but she figures it will be just another caller, she just needs a way to take him down. And, seeing the interest in his eyes, luring him back to his place, with him under the impression he's going to act on that interest seems easier than it turns out to be.
The Sex Diet-contemporary- Pillow Talk meets Sex in the City with this story of a web designer who has horrible luck with men. Three times Leslie has been a loser. She has given her heart over to a man and each time he has cheated. So, on the news that the last one was cheating also--and with his secretary, no less--she decides not to fall into bed with a man until SHE can tell if he is a good man. Two years later, she isn't any closer to finding him, until she meets Joe Simon, not knowing he is her nemesis online. Joe decides to show little Miss Leslie that she too will fall for anything, but somewhere in the seduction, Joe finds himself in love with her. His only problem is getting them out of the tangle he has created.

Spring has sprung into summer here in south Texas. Temperatures in the 100s are expected here this week so I think I will be even more of a hermit than usual. I have been busy with Sinner's Delight. But, I am also working on some new stuff, including an immortal Highlander series, rewriting The Accidental Countess and writing the sequel(Douglas and Cicely's story) and I just signed with a new company(info to come soon on that). We are getting set to move on base in less than two months and so the pre move MO has started. I am also gearing up for RT which I am sure will be a fabulous blast!

I have been hard at work on a lot of things, but here is some of the stuff I can tell you about:

Sinner's Delight, the next Bounty Hunter's book is just about done. Much longer than the first, it tells the story of a mysterious madam who has some bad guys on her tail. Vicentes, who appeared in the first book, is the Bounty Hunter who is hired to find her. More characters who may have their very own stories in the series pop up, including one who was named for everyone's favorite crazy reader. You'll just have to wait to see who it is.

A Little Harmless Request, my next Harmless book will feature both Evan and May with a little suspense. I've had so many readers who have asked about them, and I wanted to assure you that I am hard at work on their story a well.

My Federation books were the first Futuristic books I did, and now, Loose-id.com is going to put them in PRINT!!! For the first time ever, Voices Carry, Lost in Emotion and Hard Habit to Break will be in one volume, available at most online bookstores, Borders, and I will be signing copies at RT. Here's a peek at the cover.

Another print will be the anthology Operation Love. Again this one will be online and I will be signing copies at RT. Alyssa Brooks and Karen Monroe are featured in this book with me as we tell the story of triplets who swear never to marry military and then find themselves falling for the men they wanted to avoid.

I will have information soon on a new contract with yet another publishing company, and more news hopefully about my historical series that started with The Accidental Countess.

I will be at RT, of course, and hosting the fairy ball. I will have lots of giveaways, including some magnets and signed cd's with excerpts from my books. Loose, LSB, and Gensis Promotions will all have my stuff, and folks, if you see me, give me a shout out. I LOVE TALKING TO READERS. And, if you are at my groups, you definitely know about the party Kally and I are throwing. Make sure you let us know if you are going to be there.

Those love scenes will get the reader squirming. This reviewer enjoyed this story very much and looks forward to more delights from the Sweet Shoppe.

Their connection, in dreams and in reality, is quite stimulating and so full of passion that I just want to keep re-reading the naughty bits. I enjoyed how the story unfurled after a series of hurdles that Paige and Seamus have to overcome. The tenderness they show each other instantly had me falling in love with Paige and Seamus. The secondary characters, although minor, provided some funny and frustrating moments for our hero and heroine which made for an interesting read. This memorable 88 page tale had me glued to each page and had me drooling at the wonderful cover art. A definite keeper alongside with the other charming stories in the Sweet Shoppe series.

Overall, if you find love stories with strong alpha characters and a slight touch of futuristic undertones, Hunting Mila will appeal to you.

Author Interview: Mechele Armstrong

Mechele Armstrong is quickly becoming known as one of the new and seductive voices in erotic romance thanks to her Bloodlines series from Loose-Id. She took time out from writing about her devilishly sexy vampires to chat with us this month.

Your Bloodlines series is a fantastic vampire series, that not only has had fantastic reader comments, it has been cleaning up in the reviews department also. Can you tell us a bit about the books that have been released?

Thank you for the fantastic comment. I have a lot of fun writing them and have been so thrilled at the response to Blood Kiss and also, Conduit. Blood Kiss was released in October. It’s about Sarah, who finds her roommate murdered, drained of all blood. Sarah takes on a psychic connection to the killer, Marcus, who’s an insane vampire. She also meets Nick Mancuso, who’s trying to stop Marcus. It’s a bit of a thriller with lots of hot romance between Nick and Sarah. Conduit is next and was released in March. Copper’s looking for her missing twin when she meets sexy vampire, Bastian. They will have to rescue her sister from a vampiress out for revenge while coming to terms with their own feelings for each other. And Copper is a Conduit, who’s blood magnifies a vampire’s powers.

Conduit is the newest release from the series. How did you come up with the idea of a human conduit for vampires?

The idea came out of thinking about a story and playing “what if…” What if a woman goes in search of her twin? What if the twin was involved with vampires? What if the woman searching’s blood is more powerful than a normal human’s? And the idea for Conduit came alive. LOL I love the tag line. Think all blood is the same? Think again.

The next book in the series is Crimson Rose. Can you tell us a little bit about that and what you have in store for us for that one?

Crimson’s Rose, which will be out very soon, is about Copper’s twin. Another vampire decides Crimson must be a Conduit like her sister. So he’s out to secure her for his own. Only he hires a mercenary, Rojo Rose, to collect her, and Rojo winds up becoming fascinated with her. While writing Conduit, Crimson began speaking for her own story to be told so I listened. There are a lot of thrills and surprises in this book. Crimson and Rojo are both fascinating characters.

I was reading your bio, great website by the way, and I was struck how similar our stories about how we became romance authors are. Both of us, after trying other genres discovered romance through reading them. Can you give us a few of your favorite romance authors and do you have any autobuys?

My webmistress rocks!

One autobuy is Sherrilyn Kenyon (aka Kinley MacGregor). When I started back reading romances after a long break, hers were some of the first I discovered. I wound up looking to see if her Dark-Hunters website were real and finding some of my best online friends, including critique partners and a writing partner (which we write under a different pseudonym, Melany Logen (http://www.melanylogen.com , we write erotic romance). Another autobuy is Robin Schone. Some of my favorites include, Karen Marie Moning, Sahara Kelly and S.L. Carpenter, Jaid Black, Lynn Kurland, and Dara Joy.

WOW, we share really similiar tastes. KMM is one of my favs. I noticed you have a Fling from Loose Id coming soon, Solstice Spell. Is this for the Summer Solstice?

Nope, this is for Winter Solstice so the soon is stretched out a bit. LOL it is such a fun book. It involves curses, a hot tub, lovers, and a white deer *grins*.

It sounds fantastic. I can't wait!
I noticed a couple other books you have in the works, but they seem to be a little different than your Bloodlines series. Are you going to start taking on more genres and have other series?

I’m playing around a bit. Solstice Spell is very different than the Blood Lines’ books. I’m also tackling a ménage, which has been very interesting to try and write. I seem to like paranormal or suspense and I LOVE combining the two so we’ll see where the forays into different writing take me. I’ve gotten a little written on the next Blood Lines, which will be a prequel of sorts about two characters who have been in all three Blood Lines’ books. It will be a historical paranormal, so a little different.

Author Interview: Laura Baumbach

In the world of writing, you would be hard pressed to find an author as versatile as Laura Baumbach. Along with being an RN, she writes romance in several different genres, and is also a screen writer. Her subject matter is diverse and provocative, and I am sure after reading her interview, you will understand why her tagline is Writing to the Beat of a Different Drummer.

Laura, Thanks so much for stopping by the Boudoir, so glad to have you here.

First off, have to compliment you on your website. Love all the colors! While I was there, I was struck, and not for the first time, just how versatile you are. You write so many different genres including erotic romance, thrillers, horror, sci fi, and paranormal, and screenplays as well. With such diversity do you have a favorite genre to write or do you just concentrate on what is working well at the moment?

Thanks for the compliments on the website! Frauke with Crocodesigns created it for me and I adore it. She is wonderfully talented. It suits me perfectly - bright, hot colors and sweaty, brawny men. When it comes to being versatile, I know a lot people say find something you're good at and stick with it, but I find that too limiting for me. It's the same in my other career as a nurse. I'm an RN, but I have learned to be competent in a number of specialized fields -- ICU, emergency trauma, chemotherapy, OR, etc.-- mainly to keep myself interested over the years and to be the best nurse I can be. The same goes for my writing. Writing in a number of genres makes it more interesting for me and allows me to expand my creativity in any direction. For films and TV I need to show I can write anything a producer wants. My novels do have something in common - they are mostly m/m pairings, but I recently had a m/f short story published in the New York based women's magazine BUST and I have a mainstream thriller under consideration with Ellora's Cave. But there is no doubt that my m/m erotic romances are the most popular. My screenplays are a mix. Two are m/f romance/thrillers, one is a sf buddy adventure flick, and one is a m/m romance. I like to cover more bases than just home plate!

You write novels and screenplays as I mentioned. Do you have a preference for one over the other and are there differences on how you go about writing a novel as opposed to a screenplay?

I like both, but they are vastly different types of writing. In screenplays it all has to visual. There is no internal monologue, no narrator, no third person to describe things and set the scene. ALL the necessary information has to be in dialogue or visually apparent on the screen. Screenplays are cleaner, but then you have to allow the director to paint his vision of your setting and mood, and accept the actors' interpretations of your characters. You lose a whole lot of control over the story, but the rewards usually temper the pain if you have a good team bringing your creation to life. Or so I'm told. I'll let you know when I sell my first script.

Which won't be long, in my humble opinion! I was looking at your coming soon page and was intrigued especially by Details of the Hunt. Can you tell us a bit about that and how did you come up with the idea?

A challenge went out from publisher looking for submissions using the three key words outerspace, pirates and treasure. I suddenly had this vision of a pirate lost in space and then it morphed into the idea of making the pirate the treasure instead of having him steal one or look for one. Then I wondered how an 18th century pirate got into outerspace and became someone's treasure and why. The idea of an alien bounty hunter who could time travel (and looked a lot like hunky The Rock) took over the story and my little Pirate/Bounty Hunter m/m romance came about. I have six more storylines for Aidan and Talos, so I have a lot of sequels planned if the story is popular. They make great inventive lovers. I used the freedom of creativity writing sf gives you and improved on the male sex organs for my alien bounty hunter a bit to add a new dimension to the lovemaking and make it unpredictable. Having a displaced rouge pirate loose in the 26th century with no clue what is happening around him is a lot of fun to write. This story has a very humorous slant to it.

That sounds just YUMMY! What else do you have planned in the future?

I have a short m/m erotic story, "South of the Border" coming out soon with Forbidden Publications. I just signed a contract for a sequel to "A Bit of Rough', my first m/m romance with Torquere Press. It continues the story of James and Bram. It's titled "Roughhousing." I also signed with the same publisher to release my m/m thriller "Mexican Heat". It's about two ex-law enforcement men. One, an undercover San Fran police detective, is blinded in a sting gone bad. His life is saved by an FBI agent who is undercover on the other side and they eventually become a couple, move to a tropical island looking, forward to peace and quiet. They end up working for a mysterious ex-interpol agent and life becomes dangerous again. I have a book proposal in at LooseId for a m/m adventure romance as part of a multi-author series, but haven't heard anything about it yet. I'll have a little vampire novella, "Tailor Made for Terror", coming out in print around Halloween in an anthology, as well. Towards the end of the year I hope to write the first sequel to the pirate/hunter novel.

I love your tagline, Writing to the Beat of a Different Drummer, which I think says a lot about your writing and your outlook on your craft. When someone picks up one of you stories, what would you like them to get from reading them?

Entertainment! I write to entertain. I'm a trauma nurse and when I read, I read to escape the pressures and demands of everyday life. I like to provide that same level and kind of entertainment to my readers.If they look up from reading one of my works and wonder where the time went, I did my job.

Look for them at the Aloha Romance Writers of America/League of Women writers booth. All proceeds from my books are for literacy in Hawaii! Each is signed and I sent free goodies for the table:)

I am in a couple of baskets for the Brenda Novak JDRF fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes. There is a copy of Charming the Snake and The Accidental Countess up for grabs in two separate baskets. Both under Kally's name in the auction. One is a Loose Id basket with lots of books included, and the other is the Colorado Romance Writers basket. There are a lot of great things and this is a wonderful cause.

March Newsletter, Vol. 1, Issue 3

We have made it through winter! Well, what they consider winter in Texas. Although I am allergic to most of Texas, especially during the spring, I do love this time of year. The wildflowers crop up in and around San Antonio. For a place that goes without much color most the year, there is a beautiful display of it during Spring.
In this issue I ask authors what they like about spring. Also in the issue are interviews with Kally Jo Surbeck and Suz DeMello, some info about upcoming appearances, a look at my newly released Sweet Shoppe book, Her Wicked Warrior, info about some of my books going to print, and much more. Spring in North Florida is the season that reminds you time is short, or at least the time you can spend outside while the temperatures are still bearable. Come summer, anyone with an ounce of sense will stay out of the heat between 9 and 5, but in the spring you can admire the flowers before the mosquitoes and no-see-ums drive you crazy, you can still jog at noon, and a writer can take her laptop out onto the porch without worrying it's going to melt into her lap from the humidity.

My favorite thing about Spring is the warmer weather, the blooming flowers, the allergies…oh, wait, that’s what I don’t like about Spring! I love the warmer weather and being able to be outside without layers and layers of clothes (as long as I have my allergy medication!).

We have a manmade lake very close by which can be seen from my back window. A lot of migrating waterfowl like to stop at the lake on their way back north. Of course, the sight of the ducks and geese always remind me of a Vietnamese acquaintence who wondered how Americans could allow so much "food" to swim around free like that...lol

Author Interview: Kally Jo Surbeck

Kally Jo Surbeck exploded on the scene in the Summer of 2004 with her first release, For the Love Of... from Loose Id. The book which told the story of a female assasin and her bid to leave her job behind and stick it to her bosses, not only wowed readers, this unique story went on to win Loose Id their first Eppie, a Reviewers Choice Award from Ecataromance, and was nominated for the Dream Realm Award. Since she is my best friend, I cornered her to see if I could get her to answer a few questions about her newest and upcoming releases.

Thanks for having me here. You are so sweet (Oh yeah. I said it. I called you sweet. Wanna throw down?)

You newest release, Shades of Doubt, is the second of your award winning Luck of the Irish series. Can you tell us a little about the plot and if we get to see any of the characters from For the Love of...?

Thank you. Thank you. There has been such a wait here. I know. I have been slow, but I promise to try to get book III done much more quickly. Plot. The question of DEATH.. Charlie (readers of FOR THE LOVE OF met her in that book. She was the tax attorney that Mac rescued in the alley.) has been working hard prosecuting The Outfit. She thinks she is done, but it’s only the beginning. Her best friend, Danni Nolan, an investigative reporter, has gone missing. How far would you go to get your best friend back? Charlie finds out she’ll do anything for those she loves.

Characters. There is some Mac in there. Bobby’s back and, of course, the remaining members of The Outfit.

You write these books in first person point of view, so did you find it hard to write the next one in the POV of Charlie who is vastly different from Mac?

I found it very difficult. Not the writing, per se, but the characters. Mac is a woman who I would like to think I would be friends with but, I’m not so certain about Charlie. She would be a great person to know, excellent resource to have around, and truly, a fantastically loyal friend, but I associate more with Mac than I do Charlie. The actual first person proved beneficial. One, this is a fast-paced, personal tale of terror that would not have such an impact from any other POV. But two, and more importantly, through the first person, I was allowed to really get to know Charlie—what makes her tick, what she would do, how she would respond. So by the end of the book, I was just as excited as every reader (I hope) to watch what played out and how Charlie would survive. I can honestly say in several places in the book, even though I knew what would happen, I found myself nervous.

Where does the series go from here?

There are three books left in the series. I guess it’s always up in the air whether or not publisher will continue with the series, however, there are three scheduled: Fragile Alliance is the next planned book. This is Danni and Aiden’s book. Then will be Jaci’s, and the last book planned to wrap up the series will be Bobby’s book.

You recently had a short story released by Loose Id, Valentine's Victory, about a woman who lost her hearing. Can you tell us how you came up with the idea, what inspired you?

Years ago, in my youth, I had two neighbors who were deaf. Then later in high school, I had a girlfriend who was hearing impaired as well. I learned ASL. I guess those are facts, not really what inspired me. A few months ago there was some talk on my loop—I had posted something about an invention convention to aid the hearing impaired—about some of the romance readers are deaf and or hearing impaired. I thought of how many people are out there who read “hearing” romance and they love it, but how many of those were born deaf? Or what about those who lost their hearing after they had it? What is there in romance that touches their emotions? Broaches the topic of their feelings? Their isolation? I have not seen a lot and even if there were, Frankie and Tanner came to my mind, inspired. I wrote that story in one day. It just poured from me. It is incredibly rewarding to learn that the story is touching readers, both hearing and deaf.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year? Any more sequels, new works or appearances?

Hmmm. I am currently working on the second BOUND book that, for those who read BOUND BY HOPE is Lucas and MaryBeth’s story. This is how he goes down to her and how they end up together. I am also working on a chick lit I am sending to New York. Also (bwhahahaha) Danni’s book, book III in the Luck Of The Irish series. Big Sigh. Big Sigh. Appearances? Author Interview: Suz DeMello

Suze, thanks so much for stopping by the Boudoir!

Your December 2005 Release from Ellora's Cave, First and Last, is a holiday love story about reunited first love. But, you add a twist, placing it in a futuristic world. How did you come up with the world your created, and what inspired you to put tell a traditional story in such a unique way?

Mel, thanks for the opportunity to communicate with readers. In my mind, "First and Last" is foremost a holiday story, but I didn't want it to be cliched, tired or saccharine. Placing it on the moon in the year 2114 went a long way toward keeping the story fresh and unique.

Do you see yourself doing more futuristic tales?

Sure--why not? They're a lot of fun, and readers seem to like them.

In your book, Walk on the Wild Side, you portray a committed detective who needs to solve the disappearance of a young woman and decides to live life on the wild side by stepping into the woman's shoes. In it, she reads The Story of O... Did the book inspire you to write Walk on the Wild Side?

Sort of...ever since I read O, I have wondered what kind of psychological forces would drive a woman to selecting the life of a sex slave. If you've read O, you know that it's not about a little slap-and-tickle in the bedroom. O is genuinely enslaved and brutally abused. Sure, I love sex, but the idea of any kind of pain or abuse is a total turn off for me. So the intriguing aspect of Walk on the Wild Side is, for me, the reasons why Liza selects to become James' slave, and the evolution of their relationship from purely master and slave to a more giving, compassionate love. James knows Liza so well, and he goes against many of his natural inclinations to give her what she needs.

You write traditional romances under another name, but say you decided to take your own walk on the wild side to erotic romance for something new. Do you still write traditional romances and do you enjoy one more than the other?

Since the market for traditional romance had almost dried up--witness the death of SIlhouette Romance--I no longer write traditionals. They were an uneasy fit for me anyhow. I spent a great deal of time thinking about how I could get the H&H married so they could have hot sex!My personal preference is not to be hung up on labels since all they do is restrict the writing. So I no longer start a book thinking, "Well, this will be a Silhouette," or "this will be for Loose-ID." I just try to write the best book I can. No doubt this approach is career suicide, but so what? I'd rather be happy.

Are there elements in both your erotic and traditional romances that are similar?

I have always emphasized complex characters and unusual conflicts. I try to keep the writing as real and as fresh as I can.

Do you have any projects your working on now for the future? Any upcoming releases?

My Sue Swift persona has a book out this month, Walk Like A Man, from Five Star Expressions. Macho quarterback Jim Wellman meets his match in bright and sassy physical therapist Marti Solis, who goads him out of his wheelchair, pushing him to walk again. Midnight In San Antonio

As a cold wind blew in from the north, picking up decaying leaves, sweeping them down the deserted Riverwalk, Naomi Andrews shivered. The musty scent of the river mingled with the lingering scent of Tex-Mex food that had been served that evening at a nearby restaurant. She hated working this area, especially this time of year. February could be beautiful, or it could be a bitch in South Texas. This year, just her luck, she'd been cursed with the latter. Her father would say she was getting payback.
She snorted at the thought. Being a newly assigned lieutenant in the Federal Paranormal Investigation's southwest regional office was just that. General Dennis Andrews was just as bad as she was, but he didn’t have her problems. He hadn't been a woman, or trying to live down the vaulted reputation of a parent. He also hadn't had her partner.
Naomi heard the scrape of a foot against the pavement a moment before she heard his voice.
"You're late again."
The remonstration in his voice irritated her. Just as the jump in her pulse that had nothing to do with fear did. As she turned to face her partner, Simon Chandler, she ground her teeth trying to cool her temper.
As always, the moment Naomi saw him, her heart skipped a beat. It was because of his impressive height, she reminded herself. Naomi stood an impressive 5'9", tall for most women. In heels, she was usually eye to eye with most men. With Simon, that would be impossible.
At least six-four, he towered over her, an unusual experience for Naomi. Combine that with is blue-black military short hair, chiseled facial features, a prominent nose and his silvery blue eyes, it was enough to make any girl uneasy. Well, that and being a vampire.
She glanced at her watch, knowing it would drive him insane, and then cocked an eyebrow. "My watch says twelve oh five. I'm sure headquarters wouldn't get their panties in a wad because I'm five minutes late, Chandler."
His lips flattened into a straight line, a sign she had irritated him even more. It was odd that after two months, she knew just how she affected him.
"I would appreciate it if you could get here on time."
His tone was abrupt, and his snooty upper-crust English accent deepened. She tried to suppress a smile but it was hard. The man was so easy to irritate. And since she'd been stuck on this assignment with him, it seemed irritating him was her main goal.
He sighed, apparently noticing her reaction. "Andrews, I hate to point this out, but the sooner we catch this bastard, the sooner we can both put in for a new partner."
The statement should have made her happy but it didn’t. Sparring with Simon was more exciting than most of her dates. And, even though they both agreed to request new partners, the idea he was looking forward to it was somehow…deflating.
She pushed that feeling aside. It wasn't that she looked forward to working with an uptight, by the book vampire. It was just her luck that when they reorganized the division, insisting that every vampire have a human partner, that she got stuck with the one who apparently took his job way too seriously. The fact that he was chummy with her father didn't help either.
"Sorry I'm late." She knew she really didn't sound sincere, but, hey, she apologized. "I did do some work today during the day. The two women who were killed last week worked down here--"
"We knew that."
She ground her teeth at the interruption but let it go. He did it all the time, but then, that was a male thing, not a vampire thing.
"Yes, but what we didn't know is that both women were frequenting a new bar down on Commerce Street. It's called Blood Moon." She pulled out her PDA and turned it on. After the finding the information she needed, she continued. "Seems a man by the name of Adam Folsom owns it. Blew into town about a year ago. He's also buying a lot of land around the river."
When he didn't say anything she looked up from her PDA and every muscle in her body went still when she caught Simon staring at her. The air around them filled with tension as she realized that he was no longer looking in that cool disinterested way. Unless she was mistaken there was a flash of sexual awareness—hunger—that sent a shot of heat winding through her blood. Her nipples hardened and pressed against the lacey fabric of her bra. But before she could comprehend what just happened, cold replaced heat in his gaze.
Shaking her head, she reminded herself, Simon hated her as much as she hated him. Neither trusted the other one, and there was no reason to think he was actually attracted to her. She'd just try to forget that her body throbbed with sensual hunger and all from a look from a man she was sure she couldn't stand.

Simon looked behind her, over her shoulder and down the river. He liked the river this time at night. The activity of the day had faded and a serene atmosphere enveloped the area. Drawing in a deep breath to calm himself, he ended up grinding his teeth when he drew in Naomi's scent. Sweet, spicy, just a hint of lavender. For the first time in years, since he'd been on the synthetic blood that headquarters insisted they take, his fangs threaten to descend. It only happened in her presence and it was driving him out of his fucking mind.
"Have you found anything about the other women?"
When she didn't say anything for a few minutes, he glanced down at her. Her mass of chocolate brown curls tumbled over her shoulders, lifting every few moments as the night wind played with the ends of it.
Lucky wind.
She looked up at him. "Did you say something?"
Shit. “No." Naomi opened her mouth but he forged ahead."Do you have anything else?"
She studied him for a moment but then apparently decided to drop the subject. "Yeah, I did. The one thing all of them did was go to that club."
"I guess we're going clubbing tonight."
Her wry smile caused the same reaction it always did when he saw those dimples. Blood rushed to his groin and his dick twitched. Bit back a frustrated growl and tried to concentrate on what she was saying.
"I didn't wear heels just to turn ya on, Simon."
Well, all she really had to do was breath but he figured that information was best kept to himself. "Guess we should get going."
"Do you ever make any jokes, Simon?"
Surprised he looked down at her. He was actually known for his dry sense of humor around the office. But the sexual frustration he'd felt for her had been screwing with his ability to think straight. Especially since she had no idea just how aroused he was each evening they worked together. Because she was human, the daughter of a man he respected, and his partner, he would never step over the line. Now matter how tempted he was to strip off her clothes, wipe that sassy little smile off her face and plunge himself into her hot, wet core. He shuddered, willing that image away.
"I'm just anxious to get this over with."
Again, she studied him with those blue-green eyes that reminded him of Caribbean waters, and he could feel as if she could see into his mind. She shrugged, then turned and started walking toward the steps that would lead to street level.
Taking another gulp of humid air, he reminded himself, mixing with a human, especially one with a vicious temper, wasn't in his best interests. But as he watched her hips sway as she climbed the steps, it was hard to remember why he’d thought it a bad idea.

Not really, as I am going to work on proposals for NY publishers. But, I will finally not be under any deadlines. I am happy to say that:)

I'm thrilled to be here, Melissa :)

First, I want to ask you about your latest Loose Id release, Surrender in the Dark. Can you tell us a little about it?

Surrender in the Dark is a BDSM futuristic that takes place several hundred years from now on the planet of Althea. Radek, the hero, is king of the Underworld colony, while Nia, the heroine, will one day be ruler of Upperworld.
As a progressive ruler, Nia believes in the importance of modernization. But as princess, her say is limited. Her mother, the Queen, forbids anyone from Underworld from attending Nia's crowning. So when a man from Underworld invades Nia's dreams and invites her below, she accepts the offer, hoping for an audience with the king
The moment Nia lands in Radek's throne room, she realizes her mistake. By Underworld law, she is Radek's slave for seven days -- and seven nights. Radek vows to make use of every moment.

The world you create in the book sounds so interesting! How did you come up with it? Was there a particular story that influenced it?

Surrender in the Dark is an erotic, futuristic take on the myth of Hades and Persephone. It started out as a short story where Hades kidnapped Persephone and brought out her submissive side, but as the world became clearer to me, the characters took on their own identity and the story grew and grew.

Now, you have your first release from Changeling coming out soon. Can you tell us a little about that and when we should expect it?

Certainly, Shifter's Station 1: Pilot's Bargain is a m/m/f sci fi novella, and it will be available from Changeling on Februrary 2. In this story, Larissa, a freighter pilot for an interstellar delivery company, has been blackmailed by her boss into delivering a cash of illegal weapons to a trading post on the edge of Common World space. When she arrives, one of the faulty weapons explodes, killing an inspector and injuring several others.
The station's commander, an alien with the power to read the truth from someone's mind, confirms that Larissa knew nothing about the weapons potential to malfunction. But the captain, a former officer of Terran Special Forces, refuses to let her go. Instead, he makes a wicked bargain. If she can resist his and the commander's attempts at seduction for two hours, then she is free to go. If she gives into her desire for them, then she will serve as their bed slave for one month.

Are there any genres you have yet to try that you want to?

The third book in my Shifter's Station series will be my first m/m story. The two heroes from the first and second books tell the heroine how they met and fell in love years before they met her. I'm excited about this new challenge. I would also like to eventually write a paranormal Regency.

How long have you been writing and what inspired you to write erotic romance?

I've been writing seriously for six years, and I'd dreamed of writing romance for many years before that. Romance has always been my favorite genre to read, and I tended to look for the spiciest books on the market even when there wasn't as much erotic romance available. When I sat down to start writing, I found that the characters who talked to me always wanted really hot sex. lol! I was thrilled when the market for erotic romance began to expand, because I had so much more to read, and I was able to achieve my goal of getting published.

Coming in March, the next Sweet Shoppe book. What do whiskey truffles, a librarian and a second century Celtic warrior have in common?

Librarian Paige Turner isn’t having the best of weeks. All writers, or the ones I know, are readers. I am not as avid a reader as I used to be because I have deadlines, but I do have a few particular authors I always buy as a reward for getting work done. But then, there are always new ones, lol.
I love historicals, as you will see from my list, but I am lucky enough to also be a writer who has friends who ask me for opinions on upcoming releases. Here are a few things I have read recently, or things I plan on in the near future.

All Night Long, Jayne Ann Krentz, hardback- FANTASTIC. I love all her personas, but I have to say this was her best contemporary in a few years.

One Little Sin, Liz Carlyle-Another fantastic book from one of my top five historical romance writers. She just keeps getting better and better.

Two Little Lies, Liz Carlyle-this is my reading assignment for this week:)

Barefoot Princess, Christina Dodd- good solid historical from Dodd, but I have to say her governess series is still my favorite series of hers.

Countess Confidential- Barbara Dawson Smith- Good book, not one of my favorites of hers, but Smith again has a great voice, solid characters, and a sexy story.

The Duchess Diaries Barbara Dawson Smith- yeah, this one came first but I bought it when it came out and then had deadlines and forgot. Nothing as great as finding a book you haven't read except one to read that you already love.

Jude's Law, Lori Foster-In the middle of reading this one. Typical Foster, sexy humor, great plot, lots of fun so far.

Shades of Doubt, Irish Luck Series, Kally Jo Surbeck-you all know she is my best bud, but I truly love her writing. If you liked For the Love of...you will love this next book in the series. Charlie, the heroine has a fantastic outlook on life and reading everything from her prespective is wonderful. Don't miss it when it comes out March 7th.

Shattered, Karen Monroe My lone ebook this month so far. I bought this several months ago in print, and loved it. It was a reread for me because Karen just had a new book released in the series a couple months ago and since I now have time to read, I am going to go through allthe books she has in this series from Liquid Silver Books.

Interview: Sheri Gilmore

Eppie nominated author, Sheri Gilmore has stopped by this month to let us know a little more about her upcoming releases. Sheri burst onto the publishing scene not so long ago, racking up fantastic reviews and a loyal readership. Among her many releases in the last few months was the anthology Hard Candy, that is now available at many Borders or Walden's bookstores.

You have had an exciting year! So many releases, including your offering in the Anthology Hard Candy with Angela Knight and Morgan Hawke. Can you tell me what has been the most gratifying accomplishment you've had?
It has definitely been a roller-coaster year for me. I was very happy to be included in the anthology Hard Candy with Angela and Morgan. I consider both to be DIVAS in the erotic-romance genre, so naturally I was very honored when Loose Id asked me to contribute to the project. The anthology received a 'Recommended Read' from (FAR) Fallen Angel Reviews and has been put into print! It is available in paperback at Border's, Brentanos, and Waldenbooks.I'd have to say the most gratifying accomplishment I have had was getting my novel, 'Hot House: Dante & Hayley' published. I had sold it to Ghede Books, a subsidiary of Ellora's Cave, in 2004. The publisher never got off the ground and folded after having my contract for a year and a half. Loose Id stepped in and contracted the book and published it in May 2005. Since then I have had mixed reviews due to the subject matter, but I am proud to say that Hot House: Dante & Hayley finaled in the 2006 EPPIES for 'Best Erotica w/Paranormal Elements'. We'll find out in March, 2006 whether it won. I'm up against some very stiff and talented competition. Either way, I am ecstatic that the story has done so well.Besides that my trilogy THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTERS has started off with a 'bang'. The first book, 'Eye for an Eye', received a 'Recommended Read' from (FAR) Fallen Angel Reviews. The story centers around three sisters and their quest for love. Through each book a ten-year-old murder mystery threads its way from the first book through to the last book that revolves around their preacher-father and their mother. I also use different occult elements in each book. The second book in that trilogy, 'Witching Hours' will be available soon through Loose Id.

You have several series going right now with Loose Id, including your next release, Hot House 2: Micheal and Mercy. Can you tell us a bit about this particular series? What do you have planned for it next?
The 'Hot House' series is based on the concept that 'satan' is actually a title that several angels have held over the millenium and that the 'devil' is actually doing what he is supposed to be doing in the grand scope of things. After all, it would take a 'devil' to maintain an office that is so misunderstood and unappreciated by all. It's a very lonely position to hold. Each angel has secretly given up his quest to ever find his soul-mate. There are rules in Hell and certain trials that have to be endured while in office, which include temptation by some very beautiful people, who want to explore the wild-side of life offered at The House of Purgatory. When the devil isn't waging war against the pagan gods, he's running a goth/metal-rock club that caters to the more brave or depraved souls of earth. Every vice and passion known to mankind is available in The House of Purgatory. Just be careful going through the gate. You might not find your way out. But, then again, you might not want to. The basis for the series comes from several books, including 'The Divine Comedy', 'Paradise Lose', 'The Book of Enoch', and of course Greek and Hebrew mythology. The first book in the series explores the story of Dante/Samael and Hayley/Lilith. He's the original 'devil' and she the original 'wife of Adam'.The second book, coming out very soon through Loose Id, is the story of Michael and Mercy. Each book centers upon the idea of reincarnation and that all of us have a soul-mate, which we have been separated from and for whom we are forever seeking. Only a few of us ever succeed in finding our other half.
Many of your books are in the paranormal genre, with a few cross genre books. Is there a particular theme you find yourself exploring, or is each book in and of itself a new exploration for you?
I enjoy writing anything contemporary and occult/paranormal with BDSM elements. I also like to use horror and suspense elements in my works. I am a huge fan of Stephen King, Peter Straub, Clive Barker, and several other horror authors, including the great H.P. Lovecraft. Each book is a new exploration for me even if it is within a series or trilogy. There might be an underlying theme, but every romance is it's own story. We are no two persons alike, so no two romances can be the same. Every hero and heroine bring different aspects and elements to a particular relationship whether it be a shady present/past occupation, witchcraft, vampyre-craft, voudoo, or kinky sex. We all need love and companionship no matter who we are, or what culture/sub-culture we belong to. I just like to explore those areas that others consider 'darker than normal' and the ones most people don't really want to know are out there. But, once discovered, some of us are fascinated and intrigued enough that we have to investigate those darker elements just a little bit more. Those are the people I write for. Are you one of them? There's only one way to find out - read my stories. You might discover some dark aspects of yourself you didn't know were there.

You have some things coming up for you in the future, many releases but your first release from Red Sage's Secrets Anthology entitled "Bunko". Can you tell us a bit about it and when can we look forward to seeing that?
This story is a psychological study of the masks that people wear everyday to hide their underlying self. People don't want others to see the real them and only let their true self out under the cloak of darkness. The story centers around a young, professional woman, Tu Tran, who is attracted to her boss. There is some miscommunication between the two, because her boss, Jack, has hidden his true self behind a suit and tie for so long, he doesn't trust anyone to accept the real him. He begins a game of secret identities to win Tu, but now he's jealous of his other self. Which man will Tu choose? Uptight Jack, or Dirty Dev?This story is contracted and I am hoping it will be out sometime in 2006. It is one of my favorite stories that I have written.

Thanks so much for having me, Mel! It's wonderful to be here.

Your next release is Shifting Sands. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Definitely. Shifting Sands is the sequel to I, Nefertiti. When I wrote I, Nefertiti, I'd intended for it to be a stand-alone book. Fortunately, fans had other ideas. I received quite a few emails encouraging me to write a sequel, so I started thinking about the possibility. As soon as I did, I knew I had my hero. Ramose, the villain from the first book, had made a huge impact on me, and I knew he needed to have his story told. In Shifting Sands, he's the hero, and he gets a heroine who knows how to keep him on his toes.

It sounds like you must have done a lot of research for this series. Tell us a little about that and how your research lead you to this series.

I did! I spent almost a year researching Ancient Egyptian history, mythology, lore, and everything in between. In the end, I know I could have spent another 20 years doing nothing but research and I still wouldn't have felt prepared to write such an ambitious book. I decided I had to make a choice: keep reading about it, or start writing. I chose to write. :)

Now, this is linked to I, Nefrititi, a wonderful book, if I do say so myself, and has garnered fantastic reviews. How do you feel about having the sequel come out?

I'm absolutely thrilled! I, Nefertiti has received an incredible amount of support from readers and reviewers alike. I recently found out that the book is an EPPIE awards finalist, and that's on top of receiving a Gold Star Award from Just Erotic Romance Reviews, a slew of 5-star reviews and wonderful reader comments. Of course, having the sequel come out is also nervewracking. What if Shifting Sands doesn't meet reader expectations?

Are you nervous, excited? Which one did you find easier to write?

I'm definitely both nervous and excited. I'm lucky to have such incredible covers for this series. It makes marketing and promoting a breeze. :) I found Shifting Sands much easier to write than I, Nefertiti... probably because I didn't worry so much about the historical and cultural aspects of the book, which left me able to really focus on the characters and their story. I wrote Shifting Sands in record time. While I, Nefertiti took me almost a year, I wrote Shifting Sands in just under two months -- and that includes self-revisions and plotting.

What do you have planned next for this series?

Nothing official yet, but I'm hoping for a third book in the series. It's tentatively titled AKA: Queen of Egypt, and it's the story of the "real" Nefertiti. Readers have been wondering what happened to her after Nell took her place, and well... I think we're all about to find out. :)

Are there any other projects you have that will be coming out soon?

Not from Loose Id, though I have a number of novellas coming out from Changeling Press within the first few months of the year, starting with Finders Keepers in February and my contribution to the "Seven Deadly Sins" multi-author series, Lust, in the summer.

I'd resolve to treat myself and others with kindness. To have more fun. To relish the brief sweet moments and little joyous aspects of life that make living worthwhile: a tasty meal, laughing with friends, and (of course) rousing good sex!

Resolutions are hard to make. I much prefer goals, something to achieve, rather than avoid or overcome. However, if I were to make a resolution it would be to live each day. Life's stress, daily piddly shit, and all the million little things that go wrong, can bog you down so you miss life that day. You know when you wake up in the morning and think, "OMG, it's Tuesday already? Where did Monday go?" I don't want to live like that anymore. I resolve to live each day. I will talk to, play with, chat with, and laugh with my family, friends (online and in-person). Life is too short to lose even a minute. Carpe diem, ya know? I will seize the day.

I would go on a diet! I know, I break this every year. But this year, I'm confident that I can lose the 15 pounds that I don't need because the whole family is going to change the food that we take due to health reasons, like from fried stuff to steamed food, etc. It's hard when you make the stand by yourself, but when you have companions doing the same thing, supporting one another in this worthy endeavor, then before you know it, you're almost to the finish line!

That’s a tough one. I could give you a flip answer, but that would be cheating. I guess it would be to take better care of myself. I take good care of my husband, my parents, our grandkids, our children when they need anything, but somehow I always put myself last. I think I become more aware of that during the holidays when time is precious and the stress is huge and I find myself so exhausted it’s as if my own personal well is dry. I’ve decided it’s something a lot of women share, that need to nurture those around us. Unfortunately we nurture everyone but ourselves until we end up sick and depressed and feeling used. We wouldn’t feel that way if we didn’t allow ourselves to reach a crisis point before we finally speak up. So yeah, I will admit that every year I do think about taking better care of my own needs, but then they get lost in the needs of everyone in my own personal sphere. If I ever figure out how to change my basic nature, I may actually be able to keep that one resolution!
I do hope everyone has a wonderful new year filled with good health, lots of happiness, and a whole lot of romance.

Ohhh, I have learned this the hard way. I *never* make resolutionsanymore--not because I break them, but because they come true infairly awful ways. For example, this year's resolution was to pay offmy car early. Well, I got caught in a helluva hailstorm,baseball-sized hail, WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, with no shoulderand no way to get off the road. Broke both windshields, beat the heckout of my poor car, sounded like the NY Yankees were banging on myroof with baseball bats. Well, the insurance company said it was totaled, so they'd pay out--but NOT enough to pay it off. The bankwouldn't let me drive it without full coverage, which you can't get ona totaled car, so they gave me 5 days to pay it off or they'd take itaway. I had to cash out a retirement fund to pay the stinkin' thingoff. SO--resolution met, the car WAS paid off early. Good? Not somuch. (We won't even go INTO the stupid 2004 resolution. Oy, ickybad badness.)So this year's resolution? Not to make one! LOL!

If I KNEW I wouldn't break one resolution it would be to eat better. Not necessarily to lose weight, but because I'm diabetic, I don't always eat properly. If I did a better job with eating, I'd reap tons of benefits including feeling better, having more energy, recovering quicker from "bugs" and seeing better, plus many more I'm sure I'm not aware of.
